Psychological Crisis and Emergency Health

If someone you know is discussing harming themselves or others, please contact the appropriate resources:

  • Students should notify the Dean of Students Office at (323) 259-2661.
  • Employees should notify their supervisor and the Office of Human Resources.
  • Students can reach the Oxy 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Line at (323) 341-4141 for assistance from a mental health professional. Employees can also use the Oxy Mental Health Crisis Line to receive guidance about mental health situations involving students.
  • Students and employees can dial 988 to reach the 988 Lifeline, which provides 24/7, free, confidential emotional support for people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
  • Students and employees can text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, 24/7, to be connected to a free and confidential crisis counselor.

Stress Management Tips

In addition to using Oxy’s health and wellness resources, you can reduce stress by incorporating smaller activities into your daily routine, if possible. The recommends:

  • Connecting with family, friends, and others in your community
  • Eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Establishing healthy boundaries and prioritizing your needs
  • Engaging in physical activity
  • Getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night
  • Keeping a journal
  • Finding a creative outlet—music, in particular, is a good stress reliever

The also recommends the following steps for protecting your mental health from online content:

  • Setting digital boundaries, such as instituting “no phone” times and turning off push notifications
  • Engaging with friends offline
  • Remembering that social media posts do not always accurately reflect others’ lives
  • Asking for help and getting professional support if needed
