Researchers, emergency managers, and official rescue teams all agree that DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON are the appropriate actions to take in order to reduce injuries and casualties during earthquakes.

If you feel shaking or get an earthquake alert, immediately:

  • DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees.
  • COVER your head and neck with one arm or hand. If one is available, crawl under a sturdy desk or table, or next to an
  • interior wall.
  • HOLD ON and remain covered and on the ground until the shaking stops.
  • Walker and wheelchair users should LOCK their mobility aids.
  • DO NOT stand under a doorway or run outside.

After the earthquake:

  • Expect aftershocks, and drop, cover, and hold on if an aftershock hits.
  • If you are in a damaged building and can safely get out, go outside and move away from the building.
  • If trapped, send a text or bang on a pipe or wall.
