If you receive a bomb threat or discover a suspicious package, it’s important to stay calm and follow the steps below to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
Bomb Threat
Bomb threats are most commonly made over the phone. If you receive a bomb threat, remain calm and obtain as much of the following information as possible:
- Exact initial and closing words of the caller
- Bomb location
- Type of bomb
- Appearance of bomb
- Stated reason for placing the bomb
- Start and end time of call
- Description of the caller’s voice
- Background noises
If the threat is left on a voicemail, please retain the voicemail for investigation.
Suspicious Package
Suspicious packages may have the following characteristics:
- Liquid leaking from the package
- No return address
- Handwritten or poorly typed address
- Misspelling of common words
- Markings such as “Confidential,” “Personal,” etc.
- Excessive weight
- Powdery or foreign substance
- Letter source is not recognized by the recipient
If you receive or encounter a suspicious package:
- Remain calm

- DO NOT pass the letter or package to others
- DO NOT disturb the package’s contents
- DO NOT ignore the threat
- DO NOT leave the building until instructed to do so
